GROWTH
Are you a startup or jump-starting the next phase of your organization’s growth?
I have successfully worked with nonprofits and museums at all stages of their development. Specifically, I started several nonprofits (the first and only children’s museum in the Bronx; a private foundation; a donor-advised fund; an after-school summer enrichment program); helped reinvigorate a community art gallery and a 130-year-old settlement house in the Bronx that were both in fiscal peril of closing; and supported countless EDs by helping them map out and implement sustainability plans.

FUNDRAISING
Do you need to raise more money to survive/thrive?
Throughout my career, I have fundraised with great success, working closely and productively with external Boards and Advisory Boards and within Donor-Advised Funds and Foundations. In my most recent job of 13 years as the Founding ED of the Bronx Children’s Museum before we opened a building, I raised $32 million from private funders, the government, and individuals, and orchestrated friendraisers and galas to raise additional monies.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Are you building your organization’s infrastructure, fortifying your Board, formalizing organizational policies and procedures, developing a building, or expanding?
It can seem overwhelming at times, but I am here to attest that it can be done and done well! I developed staff and contractor teams who were highly collaborative at two startups; reorganized one organization to significantly expand its scope, budget, and reach; built several productive Boards; and navigated confusing local and state governmental mazes to secure funding and develop an historic building into a museum.

FINANCES
Is your organization sustainable? Do you have at least a 3-year operating budget? A reserve fund?
One of my fortes is zooming in and out of the details, while keeping the big picture in mind. I carry out an in-depth holistic exercise with all my organizations. Together, we look at all aspects of your organization, your short-term and future goals, and your resources. We bring your Board, your staff, and your community to the table. Your budget is your road map. And having a reserve is critical for unexpected roadblocks.

I grew up in the NYC burbs, volunteered throughout my youth, and graduated with a BA in art history from Tufts and a certificate to teach art. My first job after graduation was as an art teacher and grant writer at Union Settlement House in East Harlem during the NYC fiscal crisis in the 80s.

I found myself wanting to learn as much as possible about the nonprofits that were fighting for equitable rights and opportunities for children and families in NYC, so I became an administrator and policy wonk for several agencies, including Advocates for Children, Interface, and the Educational Priorities Panel.

In my quest to learn even more and become a more effective advocate and administrator, I became the director of the NYC Department of Education’s very first online special education tracking system.

I consulted for several foundations, including Ford, The Robert Bowne Foundation, and the New Yankee Stadium Community Benefit Fund (which I jump-started); provided technical assistance to the nonprofits Interface and the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn; and founded the first National Horizons Arts Enrichment Organization in NYC at the Brooklyn Friends School (where I was also the community service director).

In the late 80s, I became the inaugural Development Director at the Youth Action Program in East Harlem, was promoted to Deputy Director, and then to Acting Executive Director. From 1990-1999 I was the Executive Director at the Riverdale Neighborhood House in the Bronx where I pulled them out of a financial hole while also expanding their reach into low-income neighborhoods.

From 2010 through 2023, I was the Founding Executive Director of Bronx Children’s Museum in the South Bronx, where I was able to bring together my passion for children, the arts, and social justice with the lessons I had learned from working in the nonprofit world to build the first-ever children’s museum in the Bronx. Starting from scratch, I developed an innovative museum without walls, which had an interactive environmental exhibit inside a bus that traveled to schools, community organizations, and fairs throughout the borough. I raised $32 million and secured a city-owned historic building that I developed and helped design into a Museum that has won numerous architectural awards and glowing reviews from visitors and the press.

At the time she was hired, there were no programs, no established relationships with the community, no staff and no money. She singlehandedly worked to put together program ideas, identify funders and potential partners and to help devise a strategic plan to hire staff to execute the mission and vision established by the board.

Carla asks pertinent questions and looks several steps ahead to identify potential opportunities and obstacles. Her ability to troubleshoot is very valuable to any executive or organization trying to launch a project. She took the copy I had written and re-organized and edited it to make it much clearer and more compelling to a reader. She asked necessary questions that helped me continue the work.

I have had the privilege of working with Carla on not-for-profit programs for the better part of four decades. We met in the 1990s when she stepped into the role of Executive Director at a community center on the verge of financial collapse. Thanks to her, the center was reinvigorated, with a healthy bottom line and an expansion of programs vital to the northwest Bronx. As the Founding Executive Director at the Bronx Children’s Museum in the early 2000s, I watched firsthand as Carla spent nearly 13 years making it [a brick-and-mortar museum] happen.
